Rescue Memories- First Run

Rescue memories.  Something that happens sometimes when I handle medical or firefighting equipment.  Had some good ones today, then had the desire to write these memories down before I forget them.

This evening my thoughts drifted into the cab of the mini-pumper.  It was night, I was sitting between two rescue squad members, me an explorer scout.  It was my first time out on an emergency run.  This is fantastic I thought, we are racing to a call for a structure fire and they’re letting me operate the siren.  Never will forget the siren.  A Federal Intercepter.  It had a really low budget looking P.A. mic and a blazing red light on it a the top.  The bulb that lit the red lens also lit the face.  If the control was moved just right it would make some really unique sounds.

We’re off the main road and no signs of a structure fire.  By now if it was a working fire we would have seen the glow.  They thought on the way that it was a local arsonist that had started a fire.  Once we arrived at the address of the reported fire there was none.  Then they began to think that this was the false call just before the arson that would take place in a completely different direction of what was about to happen in another part of the county.

There is all this talk now days about situational awareness.  How is this for a 15 year old. Sitting in the driveway of the house that was reported on fire the crew chief was calling in the false call.  When dispatch answered back I could hear a voice in the background.  Focused on her voice instead of the dispatcher speaking to us and hear this “…10-46 Highway 48 & 13…”. She was dispatching the sheriff’s department.

Crew chief hung up the mic.  I turned to him and said we’d better get going, we were about to get a call for a 10-46(vehicle accident with injuries) on 48 & 13.  He gave me a look, then “dispatch – 27” Dispatch gave us the call to the accident.  We had passed there about 10 minutes ago.  The guys I was with couldn’t believe what happened.

We were on-scene in about 3 minutes.  Would have arrived sooner but fire equipment can not be driven very fast on winding country roads.  Some of them old wagon trails turned into roads.  Since we were in a pumper we did not have extrication equipment.  That was in a van dispatched from the station at the same time we were.

When we arrived we discovered a head on two vehicle accident.  A car with the front end crushed on the east side of the road facing north west.  A compact pickup truck in the south bound lane facing south. There was glass and car parts all over the highway.  The pumper driver gave an arrival report over the radio.  The crew chief got out of the cab, I followed.  We began to approach the car since it was closest.  What looked like a bystander turned out to be the driver.  Didn’t have a scratch.  Nothing.  Was wearing a seatbelt.

Seeing how calm crew chief was really helped me be that way.  Crew chief went to say something to the pump operator.  I could hear unbelievable screaming coming from the truck.  Said to him I was going to see what was going on and find out where those screams were coming from.  He gave me the okay and I was off.

For a moment I couldn’t believe it.  That I was actually on the scene of a real emergency.  Here I was in a bunker coat, pull up boots and a firefighting helmet.  The only official training I had then was the American Red Cross advanced first aid course and CPR.  Hanging out at the military and civilian fire stations, military family friends in the medical field and boy scout mentors who had been in Vietnam had spoiled me with some really cool surplus and knowledge as well.  It paid off.

Walking toward the truck the screaming is loud, it’s a woman.  My CPR training let me know she had a pulse and respirations.  My focus turned to the driver.  The front of the truck is flat up to the bottom of the windshield.  As I got closer to the truck the driver became visible through the drivers door window.  There was a man that appeared to be unconscious.

Soon as I saw him I quickly moved to the drivers side of the truck.  To my surprise the door opened.  Pushed the door out of the way, had a bystander hold it for me.  The screaming was something to experience to understand.  Blocking out the outer sounds trying to remember the training.  Quickly looking around there is a big lump of something in the truck cab blocking my view of the woman legs.  It is setting between them resting on the console.

Looking at the woman screaming from my position it’s clear to see why she is screaming like that.  The top portion of her skull is visible.  Her scalp has been partially avulsed.  My focus goes back to the driver.  The steering wheel outer ring had been pushed forward and was bent out of shape.  Then it was clear, the thing setting between them was the engine.  The whole thing.

Checking for a pulse and respirations, there are none.  Checked again, none.  Oh no, I thought what am I going to do now?  Self doubt flooded me.  The other rescue squad members were setting up to charge a line for safety.  I went to them to ask for assistance to verify that the man was in fact in cardiac and respiratory arrest.

Neither of the crew I was with had CPR training.  The self doubt that I had before I spoke with them became worse.  This was the 70’s not everyone was trained the same back then.  Explaining the situation to crew chief the self doubt went away when he instructed me to follow my training.

Along with some bystanders we pulled him out and I alone started CPR.  The first trouble I had was finding the landmarks used to place hands for compressions.  There were none.  Turns out the steering wheel deformity was caused by the drivers chest.  Providing respirations, mouth-to-mouth, no barrier was an experience I will never repeat again.  The drivers bloody vomit was a true test of my willpower.  Never vomited myself.  Never have on an emergency run.

CPR was continued until the driver was turned over to the ambulance crew.  They gave me a bottle of sterile water to rinse out my mouth.  29 the extrication van arrived then we removed the passenger and put her in the same ambulance.  As soon as they left we received a call for a car fire.

When we arrived it was fully involved.  Looked like a car blow torch.  The crew I was with were so impressed they let me work the nozzle and put out the fire.  It was better than any roller coaster ride I’ve ever been on.  What a memorable night that was so glad I remembered it.  -13

PART 2 Project: Closed Caption, Content Creator Silence Challenge

Part 2, of Project: Closed Caption was motivated in part by the first posting/experience.  After editing the closed captions (CC) on my last video I made this video in response.  Since I had the CC experience I started watching the videos with the CC on and noticed how many of those videos had mistakes.

I don’t think many of the content creators give it much thought because the mistakes are there.  From simple grammatical errors to omissions, to adding in text never said.  Very eye-opening.  It bothered me to see it and I wanted to attempt to get others creators to check their CC.

I made a video challenging others to watch and proofread their most viewed video in 5 minutes of total silence.  Not sure if it will work to motivate others to do it but it’s worth a try.  If you read this, please share the video with others and challenge them to the Silence Challenge.  -13

Blank page mayhem is an understatement.  More like total refresh-page, login chaos.  Several weeks ago and last week I tried to login to my WordPress page and this was all I could see.

Screen Shot 2018-08-21 at 8.15.26 PM

The image above is a screenshot of what I would see after logins and page refreshes. I’m sure over the time span hundreds of attempts were made. When I would get the page to load, any click would lead to a page like the one shown.  Looks like a WordPress page without anything.  No possible way to use their help because when I was able to click on it, same blank page.

It was maddening.  To make matters worse all I could find online about the same or similar problem was,  “WordPress White Screen of Death” and “professional debug” references.  Uh-oh!  After what seemed to be my ten thousandth attempt to reach a help page I did.

Not directly.  I searched for WordPress help and followed that link.  Finally I’d located a way to contact them for help on the issue.  Sent a note, then, woke up with a keyboard imprint on my face and computer mouse in my hand.  Wow did my neck hurt.  My face did too the keyboard makes a horrible pillow.  Hope I don’t do that again.  Go ahead and laugh its funny.

Awake it was time to work on 3-D, in the physical dimension projects.  Otherwise known as real life.  Now, not an hour after reading “I checked your site and I don’t see blank page, I see stats page, posts, pages and everything is working as Could you please retest after clearing browser’s cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache. If you still see the issue then please share screenshot https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ so we can check and investigate this further.” here it is.  Another blog about, every day life.  Included all the information in quotations it may help someone else.

A reference is made to a “screenshot” in the reply.  Something I’d normally send to aid in clarifying my problem.  The fact I didn’t send one shows me how sleepy I was.  Followed the suggestion to clear the cache and then logged in and it seems to have worked.  I had to search Apple help to learn how to do it.  Not as easy or detailed a process as when I maintain website information on a Windows based PC compared to the way I have to using Apple.

I’ll have to keep using WordPress to see what happens next.  If the same thing happens I’ll try the suggested remedy and see if it solves the issue.  What an experience it was to see the WordPress basic page layout but nothing else.  The screenshot says it all.

For now I’m here writing and working on catching up.  We’ll see what happens next.  -13

Project: Closed Caption Words matter, in a world of silence.

Words matter, in a world of silence. What an experience. Talk about an eye-opening, paradigm shift.  Less that three days ago now I was editing a video posted to YouTube.  At some point I somehow turned on the Closed Captions.  Not sure how.  Doesn’t matter. Here is what does.

I was ignoring them. Then I noticed “…morons…” in one of the captions on screen.  I don’t use the word “morons” so that got my curiosity up.  I watched more of the captions and was surprised how inaccurate it could be. That led me to discover that the captions had been automatically generated.  I also discovered that I could edit them to correct the mistakes.

Once I figured out how to make the edits, I thought I’d pick a short video and give it a try. That is when the paradigm shift happened. It was late at night, no sounds in the house or outside.  As I was reading them I was drawn into a world of total silence. Imagining that I could hear nothing and that I depended on the words I’m reading to be accurate.  Not leave anything out.  It would be the only way I would get anything out of, or make sense of the video.

Thinking about that stuck me. Imagine trying to follow along with the video, and have to watch the video and read along but the words you are reading are wrong or missing. It’s like having subtitles in a language you don’t understand. Useless!

It suddenly became a top priority to go back through all of the videos I’ve posted and edit the closed captions. There were so many mistakes. It’s not surprising with all the slang and my accent. I’ll bet that’s why YouTube doesn’t like some of my videos, the auto generated text.

Still not caught up, the project has taken hours and is committed to editing all of our videos with relevant audio. A number of the mistakes are saved below. Some of the best ones aren’t here because I didn’t think of writing this blog until I was a few hours into the project.

Many of them, funny, simple mistakes. Others, complex misinterpretations. Wait until you read them. Some of them will require reading over a few times to comprehend the misquote like this one. “Honey that stools that seat in there is trying to germinate well, okay” – “Okay, that soil, that seed in there is trying to germinate.” The misquote, then the correction. See what I mean?

Read on for a laugh or two, but remember what its like to have to read through it and try to have the same video experience everyone that has hearing does. That was an eye-opening experience, we’ll never again post a video without checking the closed captions. I might make a video to challenge others who post videos to do the same. We’ll see. -13

Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 4 first lesson, patients, let it fester

This is a follow up to Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 2 What Happened Next & Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 3 That didn’t take long did it!

First lesson, be patient. Seems like all we have to do is watch the show the actors will do the rest.

Been a little busy trying to catch up, things take time in the physical, the heat, the morbidly humid Florida heat.  Drenched wet clothes takes all the fun out of it.  Then, the next, what happened next?  More social engineering validation?  Having my doubts about YouTube and am looking for alternates.  There’s only so much time in a day.  The basic message is this, stop trying to control people, have power over them, or it will come back to haunt you.  Censorship is for socialist, communist, fascist, totalitarians, etc. and has no place in the U.S.A.  Can’t wait to see what happens next.  -13

The video has some long sales commercial segments be prepared.

2008 Caravan: Demon Possession or Electrical Issues?

I finally was able to film it!  This has happened to the owner of this 2008 Dodge Caravan (original owner) and myself so many times it’s hard to believe how difficult  it has been to record the event in progress.  It’s all about timing, or the lack of it.

No matter it is here now.  How does one explain this problem to a mechanic accurately?  It really does have to be seen to comprehend what is happening.  Headlight, indicator lights, and turn signals flashing.  Windshield wipers flapping door/window control buttons not working.

Not one mechanic, after diagnostics at several dealerships and independent shops has ever been able to figure it out.  As best as any of us can remember the battery has been changed 12 or so times.  A battery would go bad, get replaced under warranty several times before deciding to try different brands.  Thinking that might help since the shop performing the warranty couldn’t find any problems.

Over time is was proven this didn’t solve the issue at all.  It continues to this day.  The electrical issue featured in the video and battery replacements.  It’s a shame, the van has 250000+ miles on it, the motor is doing well never had an issue.  At this age and milage its not worth pursuing the search for a replacement has been ongoing.  If anyone thinks they have an idea what the issue is we’d sure like to hear from you.  We’re not looking to fix the issue simply understand it better.   -13

Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 3 That didn’t take long did it!

This is a follow up to Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 2 What Happened Next.

Didn’t take long for the validation about Twitter and the kind of people who work there.  Got to keep track of these things for accountability.  This is better than my pocket note pad.  All of us can see it.  Someone with time and brains can put it all together.  Found this and it will be more validation than is necessary it’s gets better as he speaks.  Hardcore life facts can be hard to wrap around when the picture becomes clear, you can see it as he progresses.  Felt it right in my heart.  Check out the Twitter-Con and awakenings.  -13

Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye: Part 2 What Happened Next

This is a follow up to Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye. blog.  I thought for sure I had deleted the Twitter account.  Then this happened.

Searching for “marine expeditionary boots” on Google to see what shows up after posting a few blogs and videos on the topic.  This Danner Twitter post is what I found.

There it is in front of me. The reason I started using Twitter. Drive traffic to this blog with hashtags. The issue is the politics, censorship and constant notifications. I figured out the notifications thing but take issue with censorship of any kind. Here I am writing this blog because the search inspired me to do an experiment.

When I clicked on the Danner Post link I realized I still had a Twitter account. That is weird because I was sure it had been deleted. So much for that plan. Anyway that leads me to this experiment with hashtags and Twitter.

All the blogs concerning the boots were posted with two hashtags. I’ll be back in about 24 hours or so and see what happens. -13

Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye.

The Unit13FREMSLT project is on a deletion spree!  Facts: Facebook & Twitter censor information.  Shadow banning if they don’ like you.  That makes them useless as a promotional tool for the promotion of free expression.  It’s a shame they ruined fantastic ideas.  They like many websites want people to login putting personal information at risk.

After watching the history of those companies and the experience of others it seemed clear what was next.  Clean up the risk and take out the trash.  The trash is Facebook, Twitter and other companies run like them.  Delete them.  The risk is all the websites that require login’s.  Those accounts will be deleted unless currently active.

Over time it has become too much to keep track of all the login information and keep it safe.  The amount of maintaince required of any site using messaging/notifications is unbelievable.  Invitations for social media sites are like someone handing me a trash can and pile of notifications and messages to send straight to the trash.  No thanks I don’t have the time.  I also believe if people are really that interested it isn’t that much of a hassle to check the site.  I do it all the time.

Online my time is limited to posting videos, my blog and an email account.  The rest is busy in 3-D real time actually doing things.  Anyone else doing this kind of thing? Cleaning out the tentacles that consume time?  Every time I delete another sites login I feel better.  -13

It went something like this, Commie K. O. ! Instant Karma?

Didn’t I mention this kind of response in the past?  While I was enjoying the air conditioned comfort of my office, this average, everyday American and his friends were out exercising freedom in Portland, OR.  Amazing footage.  From where I’m sitting it looks like he could have shot the thug with the baton in self defense.  That, would have been boring and risked all those people in the background.

Better than that, the freedom-fighter catches a baton strike with one hand and delivers the K.O. punch with the other.  This kind of thing has been going on for a while now but this footage is particularly good.  Watch it and you will know why it was worth watching.  Especially if you enjoy thugs getting what is so well deserved.  It’s all fun and games until somebody gets K.O.’d. Then you call people like me.  “medic!” -13
