Dash Cam: August post so far, video 100, and back to the sort.

97-102 are posted on the South Florida Driving 101 YouTube channel.  No descriptions needed (except for the short butterfly scene 102), count on it there is plenty of crazy.  There are now over 100 videos of south Florida driving craziness and local sights.  Never imagined there would be this much footage.  As this is written there are 700 + videos waiting to be sorted for editing.  Check out the videos for a true south Florida driving experience.

A note about the pedestrian crossings that only use the yellow flashing lights to warn traffic of pedestrians in the crosswalk.  I think it will give the pedestrian a false sense that traffic will stop like its a red light.  As can be seen in the footage if two of the three lanes have stopped and blocked the view of the drivers behind they tend to go around in an open lane if they can without regard to the flashing yellow lights or presence of a pedestrian in motion.

Maybe changing the color of the lights to red may help.  I would react differently if they were red flashing.  The best solution may be another traffic light with a green, yellow, and red.  That would get me to stop for sure and know what is expected of me.  This new yellow lights flashing everywhere thing didn’t mean anything until after seeing them on video paused otherwise they’re passing by like everything else when driving.  Making these videos has made me more aware of how they function.  I wonder how many others are confused by them?

Thank you, everyone who watches these videos. Enjoy!  -13

Lesson 102

Accident aftermath, pedestrian crossing blunder waiting to happen?, cool butterfly crossing.

Dash Cam: July over, almost there!

Dash Cam 88-96, plus specials, Special 9 and Merge-Exit Madness 5 videos have been posted to the South Florida Driving 101 YouTube channel in July.  July over, almost there!  Getting caught up on editing, nearly to the current date.  Still amazed how much footage we record driving here.  It’s a lot to sort through.  Going to limit the video descriptions.  There some driving experiences that happen in every video, accident scene aftermath, no signal lane cutting, merge-exit stunts, the descriptions get boring to read.  From now on it will only include unusual sights/sighting of cloud formations, aircraft close-ups, wildlife encounters etc. -13

Lesson 88-96 date back to February.  There is a dK2 involved accident(89), a speed trap, wildlife encounters, merge-exit stunts, cruise ships, cool views, stop light free for all, clouds at night, passing on neighborhood streets, Florida Turnpike jackknife, aftermath traffic, and skid marks (6/29), and a side trip to Ocala.

Lesson 88

Short Peacock crossing, caught in a red light, accident aftermath.

Lesson 89

Henry E. Kinney Tunnel ride, Cruise ship drive-by, dK2 gets struck by a car (why we use a camera), one close call with a median barrier.

Lesson 90

Lightening show in several scenes, some choice cuts of merge-exit madness, dk2 lane oops,  Bill Bird Marina Art Deco building, red light chaos -when the lights are flashing.

Lesson 91

New ROAV A1 cameras installed for dK2 and Unit-13, building art, clouds at night.

Lesson 92

Overturned car accident aftermath, muffler dragging, Florida Turnpike trouble on the 28th of June when a truck jackknifed blocking all lanes, traffic backed up for miles, also later are the skid marks, a couple of scenes with FSU bridge rubble.

Lesson 93

Ocala and back.  Cool vintage truck, I-75 south accident aftermath, speed traps, what looks like a trooper driving straight into traffic, storm over the everglades, driver on the wrong side?

Lesson 94

Starts with some fire rescue action, Henry E. Kinney Tunnel ride, sculpture art, smoke ’em if you got ’em.

Lesson 95

Load issues?, motorcycle rider lucky to be alive.

Lesson 96

Pedestrian close call, tree limb on FedEx truck, reflections of the city, express lane “privilege” gets expensive.

Special 9 The long way around to avoid an accident on I-95.  MIAMI US-1 / I-95 TO Fort LauderdalE US-441 / I-595 ONE-WAY TICKET.

Merge-Exit Madness 5 features special crazy drivers from Lessons 76-86.  Plenty of exciting close calls.

Dash Cam: dK2 crash footage

Lesson 89 dK2 gets struck by car passing during turn.  No injuries.  Live here?  Visit here?  Get a dash camera! -13

Dash Cam: July so far, catching up

Dash Cam 85-87 and another Special Aircraft.  Getting closer to catching up posting all the footage two cameras can capture.  Trying an experiment with the video title format.  From now going forward I’ll title the videos “Florida You Need A Dash Cam L-” with the number of the video following the “L-“.  It’s an experiment to see if the videos will get more views or attract more subscribers.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Lesson 85, What happens when a driver puts a drink on top of car?  Scooter and motorcycle in the middle and everywhere.  Plenty of cut offs and no signal lane changes.  Short ride through the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel.  A couple of merge close calls.

Lesson 86, Features the I-95 North exit from 836 East where drivers like to drive past all the other drivers waiting their turn to get to 95 and cut line.  They can be seen in the rearview mirror either getting out line to drive ahead or simply skip that and try to cut in line.  As a rule we cut them off and won’t let them in.  Some drivers can’t be made to wait for anyone this video is full of it wait until you see van driver.  A cool jet crossing.  dK2 where am I confusion.  Jump ramp tow truck?  A drawbridge break part of coastal living.

Lesson 87, Starts with a diver that cuts through the median to get past other traffic who then gets rear ended.  Motorcycles in the middle stunt drivers.  A scooter driver on the phone.  Typical late use of turn signal.  Quick trip from Fisher Island to Terminal Island.  Peacock crossing.  Building art.  Park there you’ll get a ticket.  Driving along, light traffic, no zombies in sight, almost there you realize, wrong exit!

Special 7 is all about aircraft crossings.  It’s surprising how much of this kind of footage gets recorded.  We had pilots in our family so I like this type of footage.  It seems like some of it is really a once in a lifetime chance to capture.  Like in 74 the jet is captured through the bridge with a nice flyover.  The Goodyear Blimp, dam those cobra cameras!  My favorite in this one might be the bird in 85.  Hope you enjoy.

Dash Cam: June projects & Special 8

June was a busy month for the dash cam project.  Lots of videos released plus a special.  Thank you to everyone who takes the time to watch our driving adventures.  Special 8 features a drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami on I-95 south.  Not sure anyone will be interested in watching it but thought it would be cool to have a record of what the drive was like at a particular time in history.  Enjoy the dash cam madness!  -13

Lesson 75 is mostly about a freight train with some traffic.  The Goodyear Blimp, see why the Cobra cams had to go.  Imagine if the footage of the blimp had it been working.  Then before the train we get one confused driver.

Lesson 76 is a typical day with confused drivers, a busy scene at the drawbridge and a jet fly-by.

Lesson 77 has zombies on the street, cut offs, no signal lane changers and a truck with a cord hanging off the trailer.

Lesson 78 Cut offs, police action, motorcycle in the middle, jet fly-by, confusion and a red light runner.

Lesson 79 has something for the art fans, moonlit nights, pylon strikes, bicycle crazy, cut offs, no signal lane changers, a fantastic scene where a jet flies directly in front of the camera you don’t want to miss it, another motorcycle in the middle.

Lesson 80 has some drawbridge action, an incredible scene with a dragonfly emerging out of nowhere, getting caught in a wind current disappearing then coming back again, it is another you don’t want to miss it.  Art, motorcycles in the middle, zombies learning to park another typical drive in south Florida.

Lesson 81 has the typical cut offs and plenty of confusion.  Drivers doing stupid stuff.

Lesson 82 has jet action, a duck crossing, merge-exit madness. Henry E. Kinney Tunnel north bound drive through.  Late comers, night time bicycle surprise and more.

Lesson 83 rainy night pedestrian surprise, jet fly-over at night two of them, baby attempts to run into street, more no signal cut offs, confusion.  A semi-truck showing how its done when you need to make that turn.  FSU bridge under construction and motorcycle in the middle you won’t want to miss this one.

Lesson 84 is the last lesson released in June.  It features a little art, something for the public rail fans, a death defying lane change, classic cut offs, accident scenes.  Someone changing a tire on I-95 south partially on the roadway and no Road Ranger to block traffic.  Find out if balls really do fly onto the road and confused drivers who are totally clueless.

Special 8 is a drive from Fort Lauderdale to Miami via I-95 south.  It starts entering I-95 south in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Miami on I-95.  There is a moment when a truck changes lanes we thought for sure was going all the way.

Dash Cam: Death of the COBRA CDR 840

Death of the Cobra CDR 840 video is online.  The dash cam project started out of necessity.  We have a high incidence of hit-and-run accidents here in the Miami-Dade and Broward county areas.  FHP numbers for 2017, Broward 11,856 Miami-Dade 19,285.  Those are only the hit-and-run numbers for one year.  Hard to wrap around those number huh?  After it happened to me several years ago.  Wish I’d would have had a camera that day!  Lesson learned!

Today, will not drive any form of transportation without a dash cam.  A look at any video posted since this project was started will demonstrate why.  More validation in my mind was how fast the insurance company paid dK2 when they found out that their driver had received citations and dK2 could produce dash camera footage.  They couldn’t write the check fast enough.

The Cobra CDR 840 showed up at Costco sometime either late 2016 or early 2017.  One was purchased for image quality testing.  The camera was used for about a month before deciding to purchase two more.  They were installed in all the vehicles we use.  At first the plan was to delete the footage unless there was an accident involvement.

That changed after a long weekend of viewing several hours of footage.  Watching drivers doing some of the most stupid and dangerous maneuvers a driver could do.  After discovered editing software the dash cam project was born to document the crazy drivers.

That is not what this video is about. The video contains several clips featuring different malfunctions of the camera.  The first scene is from another camera malfunctioning on what I thought would have been really cool.   The Goodyear Blimp floating across the sky would have been awesome to me.  Then it moves through the different malfunctions.  Get ready to enter the Matrix!

After entering the matrix do not adjust your video settings because everything you see is the camera not your video player or computer.  The video ends with an opinion offered as too why we will never use a camera powered like it again.

All cameras worked well at the beginning then all slowly progressed downhill the same way.  Lack of longevity and the power cord did this camera style in for good.  No more cameras with a power cord like the one on the Cobra camera.  New cameras are in operation and collecting hours and hours of footage.  As soon as there is enough footage to  put together a video about the new cameras one will be made.  Check out the video before you buy your next dash camera. -13

Dash Cam: Merge & Exit Madness 4

Merge – Exit Madness is back for number 4 of south Florida crazy driving.  A compilation of dangerous, stupid, selfish things drivers do merging and exiting I-95, I-75, the Florida Turnpike and other highways.  Get ready for CRAZY!

Dash Cam: After Irma Part 1 & 2

South Florida Driving 101 has two videos that feature storm damage and after effects from Hurricane Irma.  Downed trees and power lines, car size debris piles, repair crews, property damage and carnage.  Not much in the way of stupid drivers but it does show driving difficulties presented after a storm by downed power lines and trees.  They often block roadways making chainsaws and cable cutting equipment a necessity. -13

Dash Cam: Latest South Florida Crazy Videos

Here it is!  After a very long break from the dash cam videos South Florida Driving 101 is now editing and posting videos.  There have been multiple problems over the last few months.  Most of the issues have been addressed.  Been looking at cameras over the last week and cannot make up my mind yet.  Going to watch more videos on YouTube before I decide.  There were three Cobra CDR 840’s in rotation at the beginning now there is only one malfunctioning camera hanging by a thread.  More in another video/blog post soon.

Drivers 72(below) contains hurricane Irma damage, metro mover, flying objects, pedestrian issues, Miami skyline at night, dangerous objects on the roadway and the usual bad driving habits.

Drivers 73(below) has the little Red Bull car, a guy takes a bike for a ride, pedestrians playing traffic-roulette, merge madness, selfish cut offs, jet passing by, drawbridge runner, driver can drive but can’t read the signs.

Drivers 74(below) is full of selfish drivers cutting off everyone or taking stupid risk to avoid turning around at the next exit, a jet takeoff, a night time reminder of why we dash cam.

The Truth about the Cobra CDR 840 Dash Camera. My experience.

The truth about the Cobra CDR 840 dash camera like no other.  If you would really like to know more about this camera and my experience just watch the video and you’ll see how I really feel about this dash camera.  Sometimes, there are no words to express an experience, you have to be there, or, watch the video.   The video is a little long but I don’t think I left anything out.  Hope this little video helps you make your purchasing decision wiser.  One small tip, use a 64 GB card if you want to capture over one hundred 3 minute videos so the auto over record doesn’t delete the footage from earlier in the day.  -13

Dash Cam: Car Wash.

South Florida Driving 101 goes to the Car Wash.  Made a video at one of the places I’ll stop by to get a quick wash.  Usually works and cleans it up all shinny but not too sure the undercarrage wash is working since I can’t hear or feel the water hitting the underside of the car.  Tried the split screen thing for a couple of the wide shots, also for the side view.  Didn’t turn out how I would have liked but it works.

Picture1

What surprised me was how long it is.  Couldn’t figure out how to make it shorter using editing.  I could have sped up the playback speed but tried it and it was to jerky and had a dizzying effect.  Don’t think making peoples head spin watching a video might be good.  Somebody might get sick.  It’s better everyone has a good time.

I wanted to get a better angle to capture more of the side motion but there is no place to mount the camera’s in the car where they need to be placed to get that kind of footage.  I may get it using a mini van if I can mount the cameras but that, is another project to add to the list. -13

Dash Cam: Compilation 13, 14, 15

South Florida Driving 101 Dash Cam Compilation 13, 14, 15 are online.  13 has the usual no signal kind of stuff with plenty of cut-offs.  14 of course includes all the no signal cut-offs it also has “confused?” which features a truck with turn signal in use completely change directions and “what is going on up there” featuring a driver having a hard time getting between the line.  Then there is “pedestrian crossing” with a little humor and word play.  15 features another “follow me” fool that deserves special attention for making everyone wait and cutting off the entire intersection to avoid doing it the right way.  There is a near miss and perfect demonstration of why to use indicator signals and blind spots.  There are a couple of consistency bad drivers on exhibit as well.  Another rearview montage.  An old man tying his shoes never looks for traffic, just up and walks into the path of bicycle, lucky old man.  Also a close call with a tractor-trailer

On the iMovie learning side of things I’ve discovered that when using picture-in-picture pressing the command key allows movement of the image without snapping to those annoying lines that wouldn’t let me line things up the way I wanted.  The other precision movement thing learned was that if I expanded the timeline out as much as it allowed I could get exact placement on any item.  I found this to be particularly helpful when trying to get my audio timing perfect.  Thats all I can think of for now.  -13
