Worm bin notes: One meal at a time

Update 7, Bin 1, One meal at a time and lots of poop is how it will be built. Watching this process is fascinating.  Waste in, waste out, soil.  No foul odors or unwanted insects.  Looks like the population is growing.  There were plenty of the roly-polys and a few worms visible.  Didn’t want to disturb much so they will settle in.  When they’re hard to see like that they are usually directly under a food source.  Rather leave them be so they can flourish.

I’ll wait another few weeks or so before digging around in there to see how the worms are doing.  Next time I film these bins I’ll try some different views for a closer look inside the bins.  Check out the state of bin 1 in the video below.

Facebook, Twitter, bye, bye.

The Unit13FREMSLT project is on a deletion spree!  Facts: Facebook & Twitter censor information.  Shadow banning if they don’ like you.  That makes them useless as a promotional tool for the promotion of free expression.  It’s a shame they ruined fantastic ideas.  They like many websites want people to login putting personal information at risk.

After watching the history of those companies and the experience of others it seemed clear what was next.  Clean up the risk and take out the trash.  The trash is Facebook, Twitter and other companies run like them.  Delete them.  The risk is all the websites that require login’s.  Those accounts will be deleted unless currently active.

Over time it has become too much to keep track of all the login information and keep it safe.  The amount of maintaince required of any site using messaging/notifications is unbelievable.  Invitations for social media sites are like someone handing me a trash can and pile of notifications and messages to send straight to the trash.  No thanks I don’t have the time.  I also believe if people are really that interested it isn’t that much of a hassle to check the site.  I do it all the time.

Online my time is limited to posting videos, my blog and an email account.  The rest is busy in 3-D real time actually doing things.  Anyone else doing this kind of thing? Cleaning out the tentacles that consume time?  Every time I delete another sites login I feel better.  -13

It went something like this, Commie K. O. ! Instant Karma?

Didn’t I mention this kind of response in the past?  While I was enjoying the air conditioned comfort of my office, this average, everyday American and his friends were out exercising freedom in Portland, OR.  Amazing footage.  From where I’m sitting it looks like he could have shot the thug with the baton in self defense.  That, would have been boring and risked all those people in the background.

Better than that, the freedom-fighter catches a baton strike with one hand and delivers the K.O. punch with the other.  This kind of thing has been going on for a while now but this footage is particularly good.  Watch it and you will know why it was worth watching.  Especially if you enjoy thugs getting what is so well deserved.  It’s all fun and games until somebody gets K.O.’d. Then you call people like me.  “medic!” -13

In the blog and video Vacuum Sealer Projects: FIRESTARTER kit parts were mentioned but not focused on.  The items are worthy of a separate blog/video with more detail but was too much at once.  Seems like separate topics.

The vacuum sealer technology that impressed me so much back in the 70’s still does today.  It’s not very complicated or all that special on the average day but when put into use is worth every penny spent.  It seems it gets used as much for packing supplies and equipment as it does food stuff.

Presently the Vacuum Sealer Project(VSP) uses a FoodSaver FM2100 purchased from Costco in 2016.

They’re available in black and white. The kit has a port and hose attachment that will allow the user to vacuum seal reusable zipper pouches and canning jars. Canning jars will require a Canning Sealer Kit, it includes options for vacuum sealing large and small mouth canning jars.  Ours has successfully sealed nuts, rice, beans, matches, snacks, tea, sugar, salt and other items one might store in a canning jar.

A note about liquids and countertop sealers like these.  It will not seal any liquids without risking the appliance.  To properly seal liquids or items that require a small amount to be present will need a vacuum chamber sealer.  That is another topic for the distant future at this point so I’ll stick to the present.

Canning Jar Kit

Experience has shown that it is easier to load pouches and seal wet items like lasagna, juicy meats, precooked dishes when they’re very cold or nearly frozen.  That reduces the chance of vacuuming up liquids into the sealer.  It also helps to fold the end to be sealed over so that nothing can contaminate the sealing surface.  If there is anything on that area of the pouch it will not seal properly.

The FoodSaver is not the only vacuum sealer on the market this is the one the VSP is familiar with.  Shop around there are many options.

Now comes the most important part of using vacuum sealer pouches for emergency supplies. Opening the package when it is needed. Anyone who has ever tried to open a vacuum pouch packed item that does not have a tear-notch will understand how difficult to impossible it can be. The pouch wants to give and stretch.

The worst case scenario would be not having use of all limbs, that said the next worst by VSP standards is where one is reduced to use of one hand, one foot. One hand and foot could open a package with tear-notches. There are various ways to manipulate the package, body, foot and/or hand and make it work.

IMG_2520

The simple single cut and vee shape notch work well and are easy to make with scissors. An edged tool on a cutting surface would also get the job done.  There is an issue with the vee shape.  If the point part of the vee is over-cut it may drive the tear in a lateral direction making it difficult to open.  Another reason to put two or more notches on each pouch.

Experience in commercial sewing rooms led VSP to purchase a 1/16″ x 1/4″ 45 N pattern punch for the purpose of making tear notches.  Visible in the photo above are samples. The consistency, ease, quality and peace of mind when a situation calls for every advantage are worth the cost of the tool.  Tools like it are an investment.  The tool would be worth its weight in gold if the simple cut it created help open a package with life saving contents.

1/16″ x 1/4″ 45N Pattern Punch

The last item added to the kit was added only by chance.  If a friend of the VSP hadn’t given the drawstring tote-backpack to the project we most likely would not have seen them at all.  The quality of the materials is not up to any regular or heavy duty use.  However all the tote-backpacks have to do is work well once during an emergency.

It would be a great place to gather fire making materials and/or carry other useful items if it was the only bag one had. Plus, folded, it fits the kit so well. Got to have it!  VSP has accumulated several of these for use in our fire kits.  Having a few on hand might also be a good idea if one is considering making kits in the future. For this purpose there is confidence it would last long enough until help arrived.

That’s all for part one, a clean, dry place to put all the good stuff in and an easy way to get it out.  Next time the What?  Why?  Where? blog will be the components for making fire. -13

Death From Above: A cautionary tale of firearms safety.

This very short video, less than one minute makes the point that not everyone should own firearms and how important firearms training is.  The video is multiple view still images of an unknown caliber round that was discovered on our screened porch the morning after July 4th.  It had enough force to impress a flat area on the side and mushroom the tip of the round.  The end picked up paint from the floor.  It’s is clear to see in the images.  I think it would have penetrated skin had it struck someone.  Thats all about the video the rest is a rant you might want to skip.

Don’t be the idiot who only fires his gun on New Years eve and July 4th into the air in celebration.  If that is you, get training, go to the range and shoot or sell it!  Anyone doing dumb shit like firing into the air is too egotistical to be able to handle the responsibility of safely carrying or owing firearms in my opinion.

Every single person I’ve met that would commit such an act has always demonstrated to me they were egotistical and wanted everyone to be scared of them.  Wanted everyone to know they owned firearms.  Ever met those guys?  Shit-talker-know-nothings.  They think they’re so good with their firearm they need no training or practice.  We know the reason they don’t go is because the facade of bullshit they created won’t stand up to scrutiny at the range.

Once again I’ll be skipping the outdoor activities for the air-conditioned safety of my home.  I’ve worked with the military, intimately familiar with some explosions, fireworks are pretty but they don’t compare to real stuff exploding. -13

Dash Cam: June projects & Special 8

June was a busy month for the dash cam project.  Lots of videos released plus a special.  Thank you to everyone who takes the time to watch our driving adventures.  Special 8 features a drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami on I-95 south.  Not sure anyone will be interested in watching it but thought it would be cool to have a record of what the drive was like at a particular time in history.  Enjoy the dash cam madness!  -13

Lesson 75 is mostly about a freight train with some traffic.  The Goodyear Blimp, see why the Cobra cams had to go.  Imagine if the footage of the blimp had it been working.  Then before the train we get one confused driver.

Lesson 76 is a typical day with confused drivers, a busy scene at the drawbridge and a jet fly-by.

Lesson 77 has zombies on the street, cut offs, no signal lane changers and a truck with a cord hanging off the trailer.

Lesson 78 Cut offs, police action, motorcycle in the middle, jet fly-by, confusion and a red light runner.

Lesson 79 has something for the art fans, moonlit nights, pylon strikes, bicycle crazy, cut offs, no signal lane changers, a fantastic scene where a jet flies directly in front of the camera you don’t want to miss it, another motorcycle in the middle.

Lesson 80 has some drawbridge action, an incredible scene with a dragonfly emerging out of nowhere, getting caught in a wind current disappearing then coming back again, it is another you don’t want to miss it.  Art, motorcycles in the middle, zombies learning to park another typical drive in south Florida.

Lesson 81 has the typical cut offs and plenty of confusion.  Drivers doing stupid stuff.

Lesson 82 has jet action, a duck crossing, merge-exit madness. Henry E. Kinney Tunnel north bound drive through.  Late comers, night time bicycle surprise and more.

Lesson 83 rainy night pedestrian surprise, jet fly-over at night two of them, baby attempts to run into street, more no signal cut offs, confusion.  A semi-truck showing how its done when you need to make that turn.  FSU bridge under construction and motorcycle in the middle you won’t want to miss this one.

Lesson 84 is the last lesson released in June.  It features a little art, something for the public rail fans, a death defying lane change, classic cut offs, accident scenes.  Someone changing a tire on I-95 south partially on the roadway and no Road Ranger to block traffic.  Find out if balls really do fly onto the road and confused drivers who are totally clueless.

Special 8 is a drive from Fort Lauderdale to Miami via I-95 south.  It starts entering I-95 south in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Miami on I-95.  There is a moment when a truck changes lanes we thought for sure was going all the way.

Worm bin notes: Undisturbed they settle in

Update 6, bin 1.  This update starts with a seedling mango tree trying to compete for food with the worms getting put in its place.  Then, not much.  No foul odors or unwanted insects.  All left undisturbed so they can settle in and start building without interruption.

Added new waste to shallow end to see how long it takes to build up to the other higher level.  This is my favorite bin at this point due to the nature of the experiment.  Unknown worms and other insects from an unknown source plus the roly-poly stray adoption along the way.  From the smallest worm find until now it keeps getting more interesting as they increase in size and population. -13

Short video below check it out.

Worm bin notes: Give them enough time

Update 8 for bins 2 & 3.  Bin 2.  Need to add more worms and will within days.  No foul odors looking good.  Insect populations flourishing.  No roaches visible.

Bin 3 is in the same state as bin 2.  There is more waste consumed validating my need to move more worm into bin 2.  The good news is there is not much to note. -13

RANT! First official rant, Privilege button pusher?

TRIGGER WARNING- –  FRAGILE EGGSHELL MINDS*  – -DO NOT READ BELOW!

TRIGGER WARNING- –  FRAGILE EGGSHELL MINDS*  – -DO NOT READ BELOW!

Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the one used in our school system so we start on the same page.

Privilege : a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor : prerogative; especially : such a right or immunity attached specifically to a position or an office

In my little part of the universe one has to work for and/or exhibit qualities beyond the norm to obtain certain privileges in life.  Privileges aren’t magically made out of nothing, are costly, in short supply within the universe, and no one is entitled to them.  They’re either granted or paid for, and are not free on demand.  Fairly sure I have a gasp on the situation.

What is up with these people who are running around assigning a label to human experiences by calling them a privilege? “You’re privileged!” “That’s a privilege!”  “Everything is privilege!”  “Privilege!”

blur-choose-close-up-977246

I know it’s sick but I can’t help but laugh at their display of who knows what madness.  Looks like their head might pop off.  Always come off to me like someone looking for an external source to blame or focus on for their unresolved internal battle.  Others witness it then copy-cat the behavior it’s creepy.

Intelligent people have to wonder, is it some weird attempt to have power over the privilege or people?  Oppression?  Virtue signaling?  Do they think they have exposed some great conspiracy and were left out?  No, can’t be that one because many people doing the finger pointing are educated with financial means.  Guilt?  Yeah, there is something going on with that crap.

Some kind of weird ass ego trip.  My hypothesis is that they somehow get an energy feed off of the experience.  Like when spinning in circles on a rollercoaster or masturbating.  Start the accusation then feed off the negative energy that ensues.  Maybe give them a sense of power?  If we were in Salem back in 1600’s they’d be accusing others of witchcraft I’m nearly sure of it.  What’s next book burning?

I don’t get it but it is fun to watch the madness.  Can’t wait to see what happens next.  This might be my first official rant one way or the other it is over. -13

TRIGGER WARNING- –  FRAGILE EGGSHELL MINDS*  – -DO NOT READ BELOW!

For the Finger-pointers: Those who are disturbed by exhibitions of “privilege” will loose it if you read this.  I implore you consult with your physician before reading the next paragraph!  Do it NOW!  Close your eyes, close this page and never come back again!

Because, my well earned privilege is so oppressive, occlusive and divisive to you I will exercise my privilege whatever it may be over and over and over again and you are powerless to do anything about it.  Well, except for, work harder and stop having a tantrum if you want some privilege.  I like rubbing your nose in it like that maybe it will snap you out of that self destructive ego trip.  It might help you break through.  One more reminder, get a clue you need help! -says me

Marine Expeditionary Boot: First Impressions

New boots! First impressions of the Danner Marine Expeditionary Boot (M.E.B.) 53111, GTX, Mojave.  GTX is for the Gore-Tex liner and Mojave is the color code.  These boots are keepers!

Finally found a boot made on a last that fit my feet.  Many brand boots have too much space above the foot.  My foot in other brand boots properly tied would have at least 1/2″ of vertical movement.  When I lifted my foot to walk the boot would shift downward moving the footbed off my foot.  Then on the down step the boot hit the surface first, then the foot onto the footbed of the boot.

To remedy this I used a combination of socks and sole inserts which put my foot at an awkward place in the boot and never worked well.  No more of that with the M.E.B.  I can wear a single pair of socks and skip adding thicker sole inserts.  The fit is more like an athletic type shoe, much more comfortable around the foot.  Snug and supportive without binding.  The leather has no visible flaws, stitching is perfect.  The overall finish and look of the boots are aesthetically pleasing.

Materials quality will be determined through use.  Concerns with the sole are an arch that causes the boot to want to move in a rocking motion.  Maybe this will flatten out after the boot breaks in.  I’m wondering if the sole might stay like that and wear out the protruding part until it evens out.

IMG_4191

There is a short length of stitching that holds the front end of the sole onto the boot as reinforcement.  This line of stitching is not protected and might wear through enough to break the stitch.

IMG_4189

The laces that came with the boots are too thin and I prefer to use Mil-spec type 3 paracord so they were changed.  The sole inserts feel comfortable, but I might add some arch support.  I’ve worn them at home for about 7 hours walking as much as possible and am confident they will keep me happy for years.  Since an opportunity presents itself to track these from the start I’ll post periodic updates on the state of the boot.

Next post will explain why the M.E.B. was chosen and a progress update. Video review is below check it out. -13

Dash Cam: Death of the COBRA CDR 840

Death of the Cobra CDR 840 video is online.  The dash cam project started out of necessity.  We have a high incidence of hit-and-run accidents here in the Miami-Dade and Broward county areas.  FHP numbers for 2017, Broward 11,856 Miami-Dade 19,285.  Those are only the hit-and-run numbers for one year.  Hard to wrap around those number huh?  After it happened to me several years ago.  Wish I’d would have had a camera that day!  Lesson learned!

Today, will not drive any form of transportation without a dash cam.  A look at any video posted since this project was started will demonstrate why.  More validation in my mind was how fast the insurance company paid dK2 when they found out that their driver had received citations and dK2 could produce dash camera footage.  They couldn’t write the check fast enough.

The Cobra CDR 840 showed up at Costco sometime either late 2016 or early 2017.  One was purchased for image quality testing.  The camera was used for about a month before deciding to purchase two more.  They were installed in all the vehicles we use.  At first the plan was to delete the footage unless there was an accident involvement.

That changed after a long weekend of viewing several hours of footage.  Watching drivers doing some of the most stupid and dangerous maneuvers a driver could do.  After discovered editing software the dash cam project was born to document the crazy drivers.

That is not what this video is about. The video contains several clips featuring different malfunctions of the camera.  The first scene is from another camera malfunctioning on what I thought would have been really cool.   The Goodyear Blimp floating across the sky would have been awesome to me.  Then it moves through the different malfunctions.  Get ready to enter the Matrix!

After entering the matrix do not adjust your video settings because everything you see is the camera not your video player or computer.  The video ends with an opinion offered as too why we will never use a camera powered like it again.

All cameras worked well at the beginning then all slowly progressed downhill the same way.  Lack of longevity and the power cord did this camera style in for good.  No more cameras with a power cord like the one on the Cobra camera.  New cameras are in operation and collecting hours and hours of footage.  As soon as there is enough footage to  put together a video about the new cameras one will be made.  Check out the video before you buy your next dash camera. -13

My Pack Rat Moving Experience

Here is another video from my catch up list.  The video is new, the information is from 2016, 2017.  The important information is in the video.  It’s mostly still images of the containers and condition of them with my narration.  Overall the experience was good check out the video for more detail. -13
