Rescue Memories- Weirdest call ever, mouse concentration camp and the dead Nazi.

Performing the duties of a humane officer can be rewarding and sometimes plain old weird.  I was called for assistance to remove animals from an apartment by the HPD no other details were available at the time of dispatch.  I thought it might be an eviction or abandonment case, was I wrong about that.  I was to meet with an HPD detective.

Once on scene I made contact with the detective for more details.  He informed me there had been a suicide in the apartment that there were birds, cats, mice and fish to be removed and transported to the humane society.  Before we go to the apartment he said I think you should see this then handed me a spiral notebook page in a ziplock bag.  It was the suicide note explaining why the deceased lady was killing herself with the last sentence stating she was going to be with the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler.

Dam, I thought, with a note like that this is going to be a good one.  I put on my coveralls and rubber boots.  The detective lead me to the apartment door, he unlocked the door then asked me if I had any issues with dead bodies.  I asked if she was still in there, no he said.  I told him I had been a paramedic dead bodies never bother me no matter what state it is in.  He asked me if I could smell it yet.  Just about that time I did, the unmistakable smell of a dead human.

He lead me into the apartment a few steps explained the scene, told me to look for a firearm and to notify him if one was found.  No problem I told him then proceeded to assess the scene to decide how to handle the situation.  The kitchen was on the left with a counter connecting it to the living room.  To the right was the bathroom and the bedroom with a walk in closet.  One of my first observations was the stream of body fluids that was coming from the closet accumulating in a large mass on the bedroom terrazzo floor.

Also of note was what looked like footprints and slide prints in the mass of body fluids.  I said to the detective it looks like somebody tried to run or almost fell in the fluid mass.  He laughed at what I said then told me that the crew moving the body had fled the closet when a cat had emerged from under part of her body.  It had scared them and they ran.  Said they thought she had come back to life.  That gave me something to laugh about.  The detective said there was no reason for him to be there he would wait in his car.

I had no idea how many animals were in the apartment.  The birds, the mice and fish were already contained so I’d leave them for last.  I wanted to catch the cats since they could escape if a door or window was opened.  I was able to catch 7 cats throughout the apartment.  As I was searching for the cats I noticed all of the Nazi posters, videos, flags and other paraphernalia.  That’s really strange I thought the lady who had killed herself was Hispanic.

Finally satisfied I’ve captured all the cats I head to the bedroom where the birdcages are hanging in front of a window next to the bed.  As I go to remove the first cage I see two little cards with names on them.  One says, “Hitler, my Fuhrer” the other says “Eva Braun”.  What the hell I said to myself.  As I remove the second cage there are two more cards on there marked “Heinrich Himmler” and “Hermann Goring”.  Now it’s getting weird I’m thinking.  I put the birds in the transport then came back for the mice and fish.

I took a few minutes outside to get some fresh air.  The smell of dead humans doesn’t bother me but it was nice to not be breathing it constantly.  I took the time to think how I’d remove the mice yet keep them from escaping.  After a few minutes I went back inside.  I looked over the multiple mouse cages there then something creepy struck me.

crazy call

All of the cages were lined up in two rows with interconnecting tunnels with a single cage at one end.  Fish bowls at the four corners.  It had suddenly dawned on me how this looked like an overhead view of a concentration camp.   Then I though the birds must have been the Nazi leaders, the cats the SS and the mice all of those who had been sent to the concentration camps, Siamese fighting fish the camp overseers or guards.  It rose the hair on my arms to think about.  I quickly gathered up the mice into a single cage then put them and the fish into the transport.

That was all I had to do there.  All the animals were accounted for as far as I could tell it was time to leave.  That was the weirdest animal welfare call I can remember.  A Hispanic Nazi woman who killed herself to be with the Fuhrer.  I would have never believed it had I not been there to see it. -13

Worm bin notes: Update 21 Where did the black solider flies come from?

Bins 2 & 3, Update 21.  Hard to believe it’s been a month since checking the bins.  I’ve been busy catching up on projects, updating supplies and equipment.  In update 20 I had placed some pupae into a canning jar to contain them in an effort to identify them as shown in the photos below.

In my mind without scientific proof the photo below shows black solider flies.  Wish I had remembered them before they died.  I would have let them go to reproduce later so they could have benefited the area.

Bins 2 & 3 were in the same state.  The ambient temperature was 88º with a soil temp of 80.9º in both bins.  I forgot to look at the humidity percentage.  There were no odors or any food waste left in either bin.  There was a short break in the ambient temperature the last few weeks due to the volume of rain we had the heat is due to return with highs in the lower 90’s.  I fed the bins fresh and decomposing waste.  Also added some packing cardboard to see how that turns out.  Since the waste used to feed the worms is kept indoors and the bins are kept in a screened in porch where did those solider flies come from?  How did they get into bin 2?  -13

Defensor Fortis LCS Belt Keeper & Flashlight Holster PALS modifications.

Time for some gear updates.  After switching from my old favorite ALICE LBE to MOLLE DF-LCS I experienced a couple of issues.  When using the LCS it would inch it’s way over my pants belt and push down creating discomfort.  I also noticed when in a sitting, crawling or in a prone position the rig would tend to climb toward my chest.  After thinking of a solution the only one I could think of was to attach straps that would keep the LCS from moving away from my waistline.

Right segment of DF-LCS before adding belt keepers.

The idea came from my experience wearing a duty belt with belt keepers that were designed to hold the duty belt in line with my pants belt.  With this in mind I measured the area I wanted to place the keepers, doubled the length then added a inch and a half.  The extra length would give my fingers a place to work the snaps I intended to use.  Once I had the dimensions for the strap I cut six lengths of poly webbing, folded them in half and sewed them so the two halves would work as one.

After sewing the keeper straps together they were sewn onto the three segments of the LCS.  Next the holes were punched then the snaps were added.  It was an easy project taking no more than 45-60 minutes to complete.  After testing the idea seems to work well to prevent the LCS from moving around and causing me trouble.  The LCS rig still has some movement/flexibility however it won’t move away from my waistline.  I made a short video, the link is below.

I also modified what was labeled as a MOLLE flashlight holster to meet PALS specifications so I could attach it to my quick response belt.  The holster had the vertical snap strap but did not have the ladder webbing.  To fix this issue I removed the belt loop strap, opened the sewn seam to join the holster, added the new ladder section, then sewed the piece back together.  Time spent was about a half hour.  I made a how-I-did-it video the link its below.  -13

Rescue Memories- Crab blocks Kmart exit

crab on beach

I remembered this as I watched a crab cross the street the other day.  Human rescue isn’t the only rescue service I’ve been involved in.  Several years ago when I was volunteering for my own emergency animal rescue I received a call for a crab blocking the exit door at a local Kmart.  On arrival I could see a large group of people gathered at the exit doors but not trying to leave.  The exit doors were opening and closing continuously as a Florida blue crab moved back and forth in front of them.  As the doors would open or close the crab would keep moving in a straight line.  It was funny to see how it had everyone stopped at the exit as if the crab was going to attack or something.  I was surprised no one snatched it up and made a meal out of it.  I threw my hat over it then caught it in a net and took it to a canal next to the store. -13

Gun Control = Mass Hysteria

Photo by Somchai Kongkamsri on Pexels.com

I usually don’t get political here but sometimes it’s necessary.  People calling for “gun control” remind me of the hysteria of World War 2 and Hitler fanatics.  First it was books then it was weapons.  The Nazis disarmed the Jews for a reason, fear of self defense.  If one was educated/trained one would not be so fearful.  A recent example is the motorcycle backfire in New York where everyone are subjects of the state with no self defense capabilities so they ran like cockroaches when the lights turn on.  Shame on them for letting their constitutional rights being violated by politicians.

Giving up second amendment rights will not make anyone safer, it won’t.  It will place one in danger from those who intend to do harm.  If people had the ability to defend themselves they wouldn’t need to run like sheep from wolfs.  A few Jewish people I met in the 1980’s with number tattoos were very clear why gun registration and confiscation will always lead to trouble.

I don’t believe everyone should be armed, my one bullet video proves that.  I do believe that carrying a firearm since 1982 has made me and those around me safer.  I’m a person who runs toward danger, not away.  Individuals that are frighted of firearms belong in a therapy session to overcome the phobia or in a mental ward safe away from the rest of us who understand our responsibilities as human beings.  My safe space is created by my armed presence and nothing else.

It’s the reason the founding fathers wrote the second amendment, it didn’t have anything to do with hunting game.  When it comes to freedom there are no compromises nor negotiations, none.  Could anti civil rights fear mongering politicians be driving us into another civil war?  If so there is only one place for them.  -13
